Back to Class CLE Program – “The New Immigration Regime: Restrictions, Outcomes & What’s Next”
Myron Taylor Hall, Landis Auditorium, Room 184
Immigration has been a top priority in President Trump’s second term. The administration has restricted immigration in many ways, ranging from travel bans to mass deportations. The White House has stated that the United States may have negative net migration to the United States for the first time in over 50 years.
In the meantime, employers face labor shortages. The demographics of an aging population and declining birth rates are indisputable. More people worldwide are fleeing the breakdown of civil society, climate change, and persecution than ever before. Over 10 million people in the United States lack immigration status and fear deportation. And our immigration courts face a backlog of nearly 4 million deportation cases.
Join retired immigration law professor Stephen Yale-Loehr, AB ’77, JD ’81, clinical professor of law Jaclyn Kelley-Widmer and former immigration judge Angela Munro, to learn how immigration law and policy have changed so far and what we might expect in the next 12 months.
Attendees are eligible to receive 1.0 NY CLE credit in the area of Professional Practice. Attorneys who practice outside New York may be eligible for reciprocal CLE credit. Myron Taylor Hall Room 184
This joint presentation by the Cornell Law Library and the Legal Information Institute will examine contemporary challenges to accessing legal information faced by both legal professionals and the general public. Topics will include barriers to access arising from the privatization of traditional governmental functions such as legislative and regulatory drafting, the challenges inherent in court filing systems doubling as information retrieval platforms, and the obfuscation of legal information when accessed through commercial search engines such as Google. More than just identifying problems, though, the presentation will describe the work being done at Cornell and elsewhere to overcome these barriers to free and open access to legal information.
Our esteemed presenters include Anna Russell, Deputy Director, Cornell Law Library and Craig Newton, JD ’07, Co-Director, Legal Information Institute
