New York Bar Examination Application Steps

Step One: Submit Foreign Legal Education for Evaluation

To establish eligibility for the bar examination, all first-time applicants under Rule 520.6 must request an advance evaluation of their eligibility before they file an application for the bar examination. You will need to create a BOLE Account. Carefully review Rule 520.6 and the information located below before creating a BOLE Account. You will need a valid email address and a valid NCBE Number to create a BOLE Account. After you create your BOLE Account, you may access the Request for Foreign Evaluation Form by logging into your BOLE account in the Applicant Services Portal and scrolling down to the section for Foreign Evaluation Form. Upon submission of the Request for Foreign Evaluation Form, you will be required to submit all of the supporting documentation. See Section VI. Supporting Documentation

Step Two: Apply to Sit for the Bar Examination

Applicants must apply to sit for the UBE through an online application on the BOLE Portal. After signing into your account with the Board, click the link in the box entitled “New York Bar Examination” in order to register for the UBE. The application filing period is March 1 to March 31, 2026. Late applications are not accepted.

Step Three: Proof of Compliance Required for LL.M. Graduates of ABA Approved Law Schools

Applicants qualifying to sit for the bar examination under Section 520.6 must file with the NY State Board of Law Examiners a completed Certificate of Law School Attendance Form and official final transcripts no later than June 15, 2025, for the July bar examination. The Registrar’s Office will assist in preparing and submitting documents directly to the Board on behalf of eligible applicants by the stated deadline.

When you register for the New York Bar Exam, the LL.M. Certificate of Attendance form is automatically sent to the Law School Registrar Office, who will verify your information and certify your degree. If any discrepancies are found, the Registrar’s Office will make the necessary corrections. You do not need to submit a paper copy of the Certificate of Attendance for New York. When completing the Certificate of Attendance, be sure to type out the full names of your courses accurately. There are three sections where you must enter your coursework: Refer to page 3 of the NYS Bar Requirements for LLMs memo for a list of qualifying courses.

Step Four: Submitting Official University Transcripts

Students should not send their Official University Transcript to BOLE directly. It must be sent to the Law Registrar Office who will send it to BOLE for you.

Please follow the below steps to request your official university transcript be sent to the Law Registrar:

  1. Wait for Notification
    • In early June 2026, you will receive an email from the Law School Registrar’s Office once your degree conferral appears on your transcript. Please wait for this email before requesting your transcript—NY BOLE will only accept transcripts that include the official degree conferral date.
  2. Request Your Transcript
  3. Law Registrar will Send Your Transcript to NY BOLE
    • The Law School will send your transcript and degree certification to NY BOLE for you.
