Cornell J.D. students in good academic standing may spend a semester in their second or third years at the Cornell Tech campus in New York City in the Technology Law Program (the “J.D. Tech Program”).

At Cornell Tech, you’ll explore how technology shapes law and legal practice. The curriculum covers cutting edge subjects including AI law and policy, decentralized finance, privacy and cybersecurity, and technology driven innovations in legal service delivery. You’ll learn from leading experts, including current and former law firm partners, in-house counsel, legal tech founders and senior leaders, and law faculty globally recognized as leading voices in the field.

Cornell Tech’s interdisciplinary environment offers the opportunity to take courses offered through the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management (Johnson School), subject to restrictions on the number of credits that may be taken outside the Law School, and any prerequisites or instructor permissions. This cross-disciplinary experience provides valuable insight into the way business and tech professionals view matters, and once in practice, that insight will help you to be more responsive to client needs.

The application deadline for the 2026 – 2027 academic year is February 9, 2026, at 12:00 PM EST. Applications can be submitted via this link: Cornell Tech Application

Who is eligible to apply to the J.D. Tech Program at Cornell Tech Campus?

J.D. students in good academic standing, with a cumulative MPR at 3.2 or above, who can demonstrate an interest in technology law and practice, are eligible to apply.

When can I apply for the J.D. Tech Program?

Applications for the J.D. Tech Program at Cornell Tech Campus will be available in the early spring semester for attendance in the following academic year. 1L students may apply to attend during their 2L spring semester. 2L students may apply to participate during either their fall or spring 3L semester.

How do I apply to the J.D. Tech Program at Cornell Tech Campus?

Students will receive a link to complete an online application in the early Spring semester. The application will include:

  • Resume
  • Law school academic transcript
  • Statement of interest, which should address your interest in technology law and practice, as well as your plan to complete your degree requirements (writing, professional responsibility, and experiential learning) if accepted into the program.
  • Additional supporting material such as undergraduate transcripts, articles, writing sample, etc.

When will I be notified of my Admissions Decision? When do I need to accept/decline my offer?

Students will be notified of admission decisions within two weeks of the close of the application period. Acceptance deadlines will be communicated in the acceptance offer. Upon acceptance of their offer of admission, students will be expected to withdraw pending applications for other conflicting opportunities, such as full-time externships or study abroad programs.

Can I defer my acceptance of the offer?

No. Accepted students cannot defer their offers, but 1L students may decline and reapply as 2Ls.

How do I enroll in courses for the J.D. Tech Program?

Once admitted to the J.D. Tech Program, students will enroll in courses during the Cornell Tech course pre-enrollment window, which may differ from the Ithaca-based pre-enrollment window. Students admitted into the J.D. Tech program will receive information about their pre-enrollment window from Cornell Tech staff.

To view eligible Cornell Tech courses, visit the University Class Roster, select the term, and filter the “location” field to “Cornell Tech”. Please be mindful that not all Cornell Tech courses are open to all students. There will be a note indicating prerequisites, co-requisites, and other limitations on enrollment in each course summary. Most LAW classes are open to J.D. Tech Program students, except for Technology Transactions II.

If you are interested in taking MBA classes through the Johnson School, you will not be able to enroll directly; they are prioritized for MBA students. Instead, you will need to sign up for consideration via the waitlist option. You will remain on the waitlist until the add/drop period at the start of the semester, at which time, as space allows, the Johnson Registrar team will start to enroll waitlisted students.

Can I enroll in a part-time externship while in the J.D. Tech Program?

Yes, you can. The same policies outlined in the J.D. Student Handbook for externships apply to both Ithaca and NYC students. Note: Students with an externship in New York City cannot take classes at the Tech Campus unless they have been admitted to the J.D. Tech Program.

Can I enroll in the Entrepreneurship Law Clinic at Cornell Tech?

Yes. J.D. Tech Program students can enroll in the Entrepreneurship Law Clinic at Cornell Tech, subject to space availability. Clinic enrollment proceeds differently than in Ithaca; students admitted to the J.D. Tech program will receive communications about clinic participation around the time of pre-enrollment. Note: The Tech Campus section of the Entrepreneurship Law Clinic is only open to students participating in the J.D. Tech program.

What is the cost of attending the J.D. Tech Program?

The tuition and fees for the J.D. Tech Program are the same as those at the Law School in Ithaca. However, the cost of living can vary substantially. We recommend speaking with Financial Aid (law.financialaid@cornell.edu) regarding those additional costs.

Does the J.D. Tech Program provide housing?

No. Students are responsible for making their own living arrangements. Cornell Tech has a resource available on their website about living on Roosevelt Island & NYC. You can also contact Bonnie Klein at bgk27@cornell.edu to inquire about subleasing an apartment at The House at Cornell Tech, subject to availability.

Does the J.D. Tech Program count as a semester away for the J.D. Residency Requirement?

Per the Student Handbook, all Cornell J.D. students must complete five full academic semesters in residence at Cornell (or four in the case of transfer students). Students enrolled in the J.D. Tech Program are considered in residence at Cornell, and their semester at Cornell Tech will not count as a semester away.
